The journey through Russia was magnificent as always and this country is developing faster than our memories are fading. Russia is becoming modern, European, consumerist and faster. Clocks also seem to have conquered this country, they are in charge of the days and especially the nights. People turn in for bed earlier since one needs to be fit and ready for the next day.
But lucky enough, there is still plenty of the things we like, the babushkas, Russian villages, endless birch woods, the Trans-Siberian railway, caviar and of course our Russian friends who usually say "No, impossible" first, then "maybe, but expensive" and finally "sure, we'll get it done".
This year, 80 Westerners wanted to experience this country which makes all hearts beat quickly. Having recognised them easily by their Polar-Expedition-looks, we met them at Moscow. During the next three weeks we are joined by another 100 Russians, Poles and friends from the Baltic countries - a merry company! At one time we encounter nearly all of them in the train restaurantŠ last year, we had been sent back quite swiftly into our compartments, but this year our joyful mood didn't bother anyone anymore.
There is also a lot happening in the centres. Now, the places are supported by the West with 'only' up to 50% of the acquisition sum for houses and apartments. The rest has to be produced by the locals. And actually that is possible now. Also, the costs of the Russian organisation are now reflected in the members' contributions. There are accounting, setting budgets, working teams and annual planning...
Fortunately, despite all that, our heart centre still vibrates when we hang out together in the train and in the night after the lecture. This is what pulls them to our bosom... and mark my words: once in love - you become addicted...
